About

Concerned about pesticides? Too busy to prepare and maintain a vegetable garden? Have the time but don’t know where to start?

The Hudson Valley Backyard Farm Company can help (also see About Jay). We are dedicated to the proposition that the best food is local AND organic. And you can grow it in your own backyard or business.

Why have a backyard farm?

Fresh

You get your vegetables direct from your yard to your table. Did you know a cucumber has a delicious aroma? It does when it’s that fresh.

Delicious

Many vegetables begin losing their natural sugars right after you pick them. The sugar becomes starch, turning that delicious tomato into the one you find in the supermarket in January (tasteless).

Healthy

Studies have shown that organically grown vegetables are higher in nutrients than conventional vegetables. Two big reasons — better soil and the fact that vegetables reach their peak nutrient content when they are allowed to ripen naturally on the plant. Most conventional vegetables are picked green so they can be shipped to you from an average of 1,500 miles away. Some vegetables can lose up to 50% of their nutrients within a week of harvesting.

Safe

No pesticides or herbicides will be used on your crops. Residues of these are still on many vegetables when they reach your house and studies have shown that these make it into your body. You also don’t need to worry that your backyard vegetables have been exposed to harmful bacteria or chemicals.

Sustainable

Organic growing methods make your soil healthier. Good soil relies on worms and other organisms to keep it healthy naturally. Backyard farming keeps your money in your community, helping your local businesses and overall economy. For every dollar spent at a locally owned business, 45 cents is re-invested locally. For every dollar spent at a corporate chain only 15 cents is reinvested locally. Therefore, locally spent money creates three times more income, three times more jobs, and three times more tax benefits for your community.
